Give the people what they need, not what they want.
The media companies should take up the responsibility of giving audiences/viewers the news and information they need rather than the arts and entertainment updates they want. The media companies should take it upon themselves to show the hard stories, to uncover scandal and corruption, and to give the audiences information that is relevant to their lives. The media is a reflection of the society we live in and from the past decades it has become blatantly obvious that people only care to take in the information they want rather than the information they truly need to become a well educated media consumer. If media companies truly want to change their approach to news and information, they need to invest in educating the public on what is actually "news and information". They should invest in teaching, starting very young, how to decipher the messages that are being delivered.

When media outlets are running off of rating and numbers what are they to do then? They cannot change what their audience wants. If their audience wants gossip and beauty tips, it would be hard to give hard news and still recieve good ratings. Though the honor system sounds good, they are around to make money.
