  5. Cut back on infotainment

Media companies should change their approaches to news and information by not allowing it to be dominated by infotainment. Vicente-Mariñol in his book review of News as Entertainment: The Rise of Global Infotainment, says the author “defines global infotainment as the globalization of US-style, ratings driven television journalism. This privileges privatized soft news about celebrities, crime, corruption, and violence, and presents it as a form of spectacle at the expense of news about political, civic, and public affairs”. However, the big problem is that the entertainment portion of the segment over powers the news portion making it harder for one…

  6. Easier way to find personal information about the people who deliver the News to the viewers.

One thing that I believe media companies need to change in their approach to delivering news and information is their relationships with the viewers, and how easy the access is to make that relationship. When news is beings delivered you are giving the employees of the news team’s names and their job descriptions. Then it goes on into the news where these people that you have never met are telling you what is going on in the local area around you. Some people might not care who these people are, but if they got to know them better, then maybe…

  7. Going Back to Journalistic Essentials

Media companies have to change the way in which they deliver their news and information to their audience from many aspects. First, there needs to be a new look at what is actually news worthy; all while taking into consideration the world of journalism ethics that can apply to these media companies as well. While trying not to blame only media, I also believe that society needs to put an effort into changing as well. Members of society need to become more active in what the media delivers them, and be open to intellectual versatilities.

    Media companies I understand have

  8. Media should devote more time to community stories and less time on crime

Stories of crime floods television screens regularly and local news is subject to it as well. The news seemingly dedicates itself more to stories of destruction rather than stories of community involvement and concern or global issues. The results from the over representation of crime and violence leads to a poorly informed audience, whose concerns lie with fear, rather than rationale. Furthermore, this type of representation only helps to support false stereotypes behind criminals in society.

The idea that television viewing helps to shape the fear of violence in the world is not an entirely new concept. The Cultivation Theory…

  9. Give the people what they need, not what they want.

The media companies should take up the responsibility of giving audiences/viewers the news and information they need rather than the arts and entertainment updates they want. The media companies should take it upon themselves to show the hard stories, to uncover scandal and corruption, and to give the audiences information that is relevant to their lives. The media is a reflection of the society we live in and from the past decades it has become blatantly obvious that people only care to take in the information they want rather than the information they truly need to become a well educated…

  10. Unbias media and breaking up the media conglomrates

There should be news that is totally unbiased that just reports objective facts. The programs that do have slants should inform the audience of the slant. There should also be an group that check sources to find out if what is reported is true. Third, media conglomrates should be broken so there can be more voices because media conglomrates look out for the interests of the companies that could protects themselves against certain information about them coming out.

  11. Media Monopolies

Should our media be concentrated in the hands of the few or should they be broken up?
Early in the 20th century our government went after corporations who owned too much of their fields, whether it was oil or steel. Should the FCC do the same with media companies who are acquiring too many channels, programming, etc?
Do you think there is any danger in a single company owning a large percentage of media channels?

  12. Less Petty Crime Stories and More Relation to Global News at the Local Level

Local news is flooded with stories of "an armed robbery on 6th street" or "a house fire in this neighborhood." While these stories are indeed important to the victims, there is little chance that they affect even 1% of the community that hears these reports.

Local news must include more national and international stories and how those stories affect local citizens. Local news is one of the most utilized sources for news among Americans, so it needs to adequately reflect not only the local community, but the national and international community as well.

It goes without saying that this news…

  13. News Vs Opinion must be clearly and frequently labeled as such. Facts should be clearly referenced.

There needs to be accountability for any NEWS Identifying distribution. Reported News needs to clearly reference sources. Corrections are manditory and get same time - time/slot.

  14. mentally healthy news

The current media is built around assumptions of conflict, fear, and gossip. I want to hear about about our problems, including suggested solutions and successful efforts to deal with the problems. This reinforces our sense of capability as a people. I want to know what is valid truth rather than presenting false talking points as if that balances the perspective. I want a place for news where courteous discourse is the norm.

The current websites use algorithms built on what is popular, which amps up adrenaline rush topics and the lowest common denominator. I want an option that we can…

  15. they should stop whitewashing with tabloid fodder (Corona, Queens NY)

My point is that their really isn't news on the news anymore. The majority of the time, its full of tabloid fodder and if they finally do have news its biased. We need something that gives us the facts and breaks it down in a way that we can understand what is going on. A lot of the times news reporters will use all this lingo as if the normal person would understand. This confuses people and makes them not want to watch. It's not dumbing down if you actually speak in English!

  16. Require stations to pay reporters more than newscasters

Newscasters get the glory of fame already, and we'll never be short of people who can do their job. Reporters do the actual work and the system is suffering under a great lack of them right now, or at least funding for them. Most stations these days rely on very few sources for their information, and that is causing a great void of variety in views on essential issues, and a lack of information on a global level.

Also, get unattractive people to report and anchor again, those gleaming white teeth remind me too much of high school popular kids.

  17. FCC would regulate that with which it did not agree.

The idea of the government controlling news and information delivery, or policy making to change the nature of the information reminds me of what propogandist Dr. Goebels did in Nazi germany. This control will never fly with the American People. Unconstitutional.

  18. Replace the black and white polarization of issues with REAL DEBATE between acual experts

Pundits are the most useless tripe to froth up on the shores of humanity since tele-evangelists. Get rid of them and have actual debates between 3 groups, one from each side and a MODERATE opinion who can argue intelligently for and against each. Require the newscasters to stop editorializing and emotionalizing issues that are already volatile. Post the persons full credentials in small writing under them so we know they are legitimate.

  19. Osscene Commercial Broadcasts need not be overlooked!

On a daily basis I have seen offensive and obscene commercials during daytime and evening hours, and this needs to stop. I am referring to these commercials that promoting male enhancement pills. This broadcast has come on throughout the day and evening hours when it shouldn’t. There should be tighter restrictions on what is being aired for promotional purposes because this particular ad is encouraging males to take a pill and in return you will be able to get more women and enjoy sex. Keep in mind that this is a local channel. According to the First Amendment indecent material…

  20. FCC: Keep Over the Air TV (OTA) free and available.

The recent re-banding and auctioning of spectrum formerly reserved for broadcast TV has spurred the thoughts of many that the FCC might be anxious to sell off even more spectrum. Some have gone as far as to say that, with cable, satellite and Internet media available, there is no longer a need for OTA TV broadcasting. Nothing could be further from the truth.
OTA broadcasting provides a local focus from a broadcaster in a specific geographic region. That focus is not shared by cable and satellite operations.
There are also economic and social arguments to be made in favor of…
