CLOSED: How should media companies change their approaches to delivering news and information?

The reboot.fcc.gov project has ended. All related public feedback forums have been closed.*

Creative ideas are needed. Please tell us what could be done to improve information and news in this digital era.

  1. FCC: Keep Over the Air TV (OTA) free and available.

The recent re-banding and auctioning of spectrum formerly reserved for broadcast TV has spurred the thoughts of many that the FCC might be anxious to sell off even more spectrum. Some have gone as far as to say that, with cable, satellite and Internet media available, there is no longer a need for OTA TV broadcasting. Nothing could be further from the truth.
OTA broadcasting provides a local focus from a broadcaster in a specific geographic region. That focus is not shared by cable and satellite operations.
There are also economic and social arguments to be made in favor of…

  2. Renew the focus on "...serving the community interest..."

Media companies, and the FCC, need to be reminded of the charter to "...serve in the interest of the local community..." These words were, for many years, the key covenant made between the broadcaster and the FCC in exchange for the right to use the airwaves. At some point in the 80's, the covenant was broken. Local radio stations were assimilated into media conglomerates, local news and regional programming were replaced, formats were changed and, by the end of the 90's, most of the radio programming was served via a "lights out" facility with a national feed and "local traffic…

  3. Commercial media reap monetary benefits via public; They should subsidize public service news media.

Need for balance between commercial excess and public service in news services.

  4. News Vs Opinion must be clearly and frequently labeled as such. Facts should be clearly referenced.

There needs to be accountability for any NEWS Identifying distribution. Reported News needs to clearly reference sources. Corrections are manditory and get same time - time/slot.

  5. they should stop whitewashing with tabloid fodder (Corona, Queens NY)

My point is that their really isn't news on the news anymore. The majority of the time, its full of tabloid fodder and if they finally do have news its biased. We need something that gives us the facts and breaks it down in a way that we can understand what is going on. A lot of the times news reporters will use all this lingo as if the normal person would understand. This confuses people and makes them not want to watch. It's not dumbing down if you actually speak in English!

  6. mentally healthy news

The current media is built around assumptions of conflict, fear, and gossip. I want to hear about about our problems, including suggested solutions and successful efforts to deal with the problems. This reinforces our sense of capability as a people. I want to know what is valid truth rather than presenting false talking points as if that balances the perspective. I want a place for news where courteous discourse is the norm.

The current websites use algorithms built on what is popular, which amps up adrenaline rush topics and the lowest common denominator. I want an option that we can…

  7. There should be consequences for media companies who purposely misrepresent information.

NBC recently portrayed a totally different situtation on a 911 call by simply putting two seperate parts together and leaving out others. How can this be go unanswered by NBC to the American people? This is a HUGE situation! These companies are trying to run our country! I am not quite sure of how it should be totally regulated and safe guard our freedoms as well. BUT truth is truth and lies are lies that should not be allowed. They are changing OUR great America! Someone(s) in these companies have made decisions to change our country over the Martin and…

  9. Content Creators and Distributors should be kept separate

Currently individuals who create much of the content also have huge stakes (or are co-owned, i.e. NBC / Comcast) with distribution channels.
This clearly creates a conflict of interest and hurts the consumer. Large telecoms that produce content have clear incentives to hamper the distribution of other legal media, and it is already happening!
Comcast limits the data transfer for their internet service, while ironically having no limits on the amount of their own IPTV that can be viewed. This anticompetitive behavior puts innovative companies like netflix and hulu at a disadvantage unfairly, while also hampering other legal uses of…

  10. Media companies should ask the people

The media only puts out what they want and says it however they want. I think, for a change, the media companies should ask the people what they are interested in hearing, since it is the people they are trying to get the information to. I also think that the media should tell the things how they really are. There should be a law against the media from leaving out information and from modifying it to their convenience. The media should talk with the truth.

  11. This should be for the companies themselves to decide.

The Commission has the power to regulate some aspects of the business of communication by radio and by wire. But constitutionally, government does not have the power to regulate companies' "approaches to delivering news and information." This is an area in which the companies should be free to be creative, and the marketplace free to vote with its eyes and its wallets. Don't you agree?

  12. FCC would regulate that with which it did not agree.

The idea of the government controlling news and information delivery, or policy making to change the nature of the information reminds me of what propogandist Dr. Goebels did in Nazi germany. This control will never fly with the American People. Unconstitutional.

  13. Require stations to pay reporters more than newscasters

Newscasters get the glory of fame already, and we'll never be short of people who can do their job. Reporters do the actual work and the system is suffering under a great lack of them right now, or at least funding for them. Most stations these days rely on very few sources for their information, and that is causing a great void of variety in views on essential issues, and a lack of information on a global level.

Also, get unattractive people to report and anchor again, those gleaming white teeth remind me too much of high school popular kids.

  14. Less Petty Crime Stories and More Relation to Global News at the Local Level

Local news is flooded with stories of "an armed robbery on 6th street" or "a house fire in this neighborhood." While these stories are indeed important to the victims, there is little chance that they affect even 1% of the community that hears these reports.

Local news must include more national and international stories and how those stories affect local citizens. Local news is one of the most utilized sources for news among Americans, so it needs to adequately reflect not only the local community, but the national and international community as well.

It goes without saying that this news…

  15. Replace the black and white polarization of issues with REAL DEBATE between acual experts

Pundits are the most useless tripe to froth up on the shores of humanity since tele-evangelists. Get rid of them and have actual debates between 3 groups, one from each side and a MODERATE opinion who can argue intelligently for and against each. Require the newscasters to stop editorializing and emotionalizing issues that are already volatile. Post the persons full credentials in small writing under them so we know they are legitimate.

  16. Unbias media and breaking up the media conglomrates

There should be news that is totally unbiased that just reports objective facts. The programs that do have slants should inform the audience of the slant. There should also be an group that check sources to find out if what is reported is true. Third, media conglomrates should be broken so there can be more voices because media conglomrates look out for the interests of the companies that could protects themselves against certain information about them coming out.

  19. Bring in differant cable providers into our areas

I moved to Little Ferry, NJ. I wish that Cablevision could come here. They have Time Warner. Can't they share the area and let the people decide what they want as there cable provider? I want Cablevision. I live near the border of Hackensack, NJ. People, why not let us decided who we want. Cablevision gives free movies tickets every Tuesday as part of there rewards. You may call to find this out. Only Cablevision does this. I have Verizon. But I still do not back down on wanting Cablevision.

Social engagement networks could enhance advertising effectiveness, study shows

MIAMI, Fla – Many news consumers feel bombarded by advertising but are more receptive to it if is presented in a trusted, interactive environment, a new study for The Associated Press concludes.

The study of advertising consumption among consumers in four U.S. cities was conducted by the ethnographic research company, Context-Based Research Group of Baltimore, and released today in conjunction with WeMedia Miami, a conference focused on transformative media models.
