CLOSED: Media In Your Community

The reboot.fcc.gov project has ended. All related public feedback forums have been closed.*

Tell us about your community and its media. Do you have a newspaper? Local TV news stations? Great websites? Anything else? What works well? What works poorly? How have things changed over time? What information do you wish you could get but can’t?

Please list the City and State you’re telling us about as the title of your idea.

  1. Marietta, GA

I publish a community magazine. I wish the Cobb County police had a more efficient way of providing police incident reports.

  2. Escondido, California

We get decent coverage from the North County Times but could use more. There are many small magazines.

  3. Havana, Illinois

There is nothing new about broadband in rural America. FCC should recognize most of America is rural. I think if a company can provide 100T to Paris and London it should also be able to adequately serve the rural areas it pretends to serve. I know of two small communities outside of the last mile that have no landline, no cable, and no cell tower in range.

Companies say this a business decision. I say it a travesty to not be able to call 911 from home.

The LA Times cuts jobs every few months and our local indie rock station 103.1 went off the air last year. LA Weekly was bought by a national corporation in 2007. Our local media is dying. We need to preserve local ownership.

  7. Birmingham, AL

Lots of layoffs at The Birmingham News and local television stations... and also salary cuts for remaining employees as well as salary freezes. I've also found the reporting at the Birmingham News website to be thin; I think the News can sometimes do good work... we've had some interesting (!) politics here and there are some good reporters. Across print (including weekly papers) & broadcast here, I am dismayed by how conservative the media can be... there isn't enough balance. Or unbiased reporting. Overall, I worry that the quality of journalism will suffer if media do not find a sustainable…

  10. Chicago

We have too many corporate controlled radio music stations in Chicago and we have Progressive Talk Radio and WBEZ, that are somewhat responsive to the very progressive population living in Chicago but no real access to local community groups. We have a few LPFM stations scattered across the city that are a little more open to local grass roots organizations and a Can TV station but otherwise there is not much access to the media for grassroots community organizations. I would love a publicly controlled High Powered FM radio station in this town that had the access that the Can…

  11. South San Francisco, CA

My city of 60,000 has no local newspaper. As a result our citizens are uninformed about local issues with city government and schools.
A couple of years ago I started a local Yahoo Group called SouthCityUSA.

    http://groups.yahoo.com/group/southcityusa/

There members can post about what's going on in our community and discuss issues.
I created an ongoing Google Alert for "South San Francisco" and I post links to pertinent news stories that appear in the San Francisco Chronicle, or other nearby newspapers and television broadcasts that mention our city, as well as press releases and city government meetings and agendas.
    It's not…

  13. Lehigh Valley, PA

We have Service Electric Cable TV and Communications as our ONLY internet provider at our business location. First of all how is that possible??? Second, today, the ENTIRE company was shut down due to the funeral of the owner. How is that possible?? What gives them the right to be the only internet provider? How do they get away with closing an entire company?

  14. Sundown, NY -We own the local paper and hope to be able to preserve the right of freedom of speech

Our paper is small, but effective and has been in existence since 1947. It is a weekly. We pride ourselves in printing the truth and acknowledge people's difference of opinions.

  15. CHICAGO ILLINOIS

CREATIVE ACCOUNTING ON COMCASTS PART. I have a letter in writing that states my "bundle" should be $114.99. I was being billed $119.99. After spending many hours on the phone with them the situation is not resolved. I am trying to get a different provider but am told that Comcast has a lock on the City of Chicago? Why don't I have the freedom to use a different provider?

Nothing works with any of these companies for actions of NOT allowing people like myself to get on air and VOICE truth truth which is TRUTH everybody must and needs to know. This needs to change because i believe people that wants to know deserves to know the accurate truth broadcasted globally.
