CLOSED: Media In Your Community

The reboot.fcc.gov project has ended. All related public feedback forums have been closed.*

Tell us about your community and its media. Do you have a newspaper? Local TV news stations? Great websites? Anything else? What works well? What works poorly? How have things changed over time? What information do you wish you could get but can’t?

Please list the City and State you’re telling us about as the title of your idea.

  1. New Orleans, LA

We have great radio here, a good mix of independent and conservative voice, the newspaper is relatively liberal like most mainstream media, but they do print conservative opinion pieces almost daily.

  2. Buffalo, New York

Has average coverage of politics, mostly "he said ... she said" stuff. Fluff.

  3. Berkeley, Ca

KPFA/KPFB is great; a supporter of local talent and important local and world issues. Clear Channel and other conglomerates still have a strangle hold on our radio waves. Internet radio is a great resource but the good stuff tends to not be Local. We need more Quality Live Music Venues that support local talent.

  4. Worcester, MA

We have a terrible newspaper the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. It has only one or two original stories per paper.

We have a weekly Magazine the Worcester Mag which is excellent. no enough for 2nd largest city in New England

  5. Chicago, IL: Wi-Fi Mesh Networks + Hyperlocal News and Information

As part of the 49th ward's participatory budgeting process (see http://participatorybudgeting49.wordpress.com/) one of the proposals for the ward's menu money is a pilot of free, public Wi-Fi mesh network. I see such platforms as a great opportunity for hyperlocal journalism. As broadband expansion projects gain more traction, I think its important to look at how they can not only increase access to networks or content, abstractly, but crucial community news and information as well.

  6. Port Townsend, WA

There used to be an independent newspaper, but the community let it die. Now the establishment weekly paper is the only poorly written, non-investigative access. Also, the long-awaited radio broadcast license that was awarded to the area has yet to be used.

  7. Lyon, France

We need to hear more from the US media in France. We need more coverage! France media only talk about French politics which are really boring. We need an alliance between both countries. I have lived in DC for a few years and I really miss it. Time to do some good change over here.

  8. Corvallis, OR

Local media is extremely limited. The daily newspaper is lame. Other print publications are somewhat interesting, but infrequent. Local broadcast is minimal and unexciting, except for KBOO, locally rebroadcast, but Portland oriented. Cable access TV has some promise, but too few volunteers to create much programming.

  9. Newark, DE

1 newspaper lacking in quality news coverage. Local TV stations barely cover my state. Lumped in with other states' coverage (PA, NJ, MD).

Need more voices. More unbiased media outlets. More jobs in media.

  11. The state of Florida

Florida has a serious issue with law enforcement conducting illegal sting operations all over the state and have been doing so for some time. The problem is that law enforcement is lying to the media about how they are conducting these operations, but the media will not report the truth. These news agencies that will not report the truth should be looked into. This is a serious problem. According to the FCC, it is illegal for the media to report unfair, biased and distorted stories. That is exactly what is going on all over the state of Florida. If someone…

  12. Fresno, CA

Fresno's television news stations tend to swing between shallow and sensational. The dominant radio station mocks and attacks people and positions that are not in harmony with its rigid definition of being conservative. The Fresno Bee tends to treat city officialdom with a light touch, is mostly superficial about problems related to homelessness, water, pesticides, etc. It did an in depth, credible job on air pollution but has not stayed with it. The Community Alliance opens up many stories that the Bee does not cover but it is hampered by its monthly publication cycle. It would be nice if the…

  13. Funding for public radio in L.A.

I want more local news magazines on stuff going on in my city. The skeleton crews at the local newsrooms are totally insufficient.

  14. Mankato, MN

The online part of the local paper has a forum and anybody can leave comments to a letter to the editor or a story. The reporting is better than the local tv station, which leaves a lot of serious reporting to be desired. It's not at all investigative.

  15. Spring, Texas 77381.

I only listen to NPR. What happened to both sides of the story? Our newspaper, The Villager, did not even carry the story of President Obama's election. Fair and balanced is hard to find around here. I'd like to hear and see the news reported as it happens, without someone's biased spin attached. I'll take responsibility for sorting through the facts and making my own decisions. Our community is owned by the party of "No".

  17. Newport News, VA

Very racially biased reporting centered on black community, needs to feature a more diverse community view. Also tends to paint small businesses in a negative light while seldom saying bad about larger businesses unless it involves a murder or huge scandal. Local reports should also tell more local news and less "world drama"- why bother with a divorce in another country if much worse is happening in our own back yards?

  18. Las Vegas, NV

Our local newspaper the Review-Journal is terrible, since it's heavily conservative. The Sun does great coverage that the R-J doesn't do, we've also got two alternatives that aren't bad, but good writing. Also channel 3 & 8 is the best news station in town, while channels 5 & 13 are terrible & mostly do more fluff than report real news, but they need to do much better. So that's my opinion on this.

Broadband access. Grant funding for last mile service in this rural area smack dab in the middle of the Phila-Balto-DC metro corridor.
