The reboot.fcc.gov project has ended. All related public feedback forums have been closed.*

Tell us about your community and its media. Do you have a newspaper? Local TV news stations? Great websites? Anything else? What works well? What works poorly? How have things changed over time? What information do you wish you could get but can’t?

Please list the City and State you’re telling us about as the title of your idea.

  1. Brattleboro, Vermont

  2. Pittsboro, NC

Two small local papers. No local TV or radio. Researching low band FM/webcasting. Spectrum licensing costs too high; spectrum arbitrage auction broken; affordable Internet access big issue for many. Policy reform and open spectrum policies need revisiting. FCC 2002 ruling local loop unbundling and Net Neutrality badly needed in the land of the free (spEEch)

  4. Stephens City, Virginia

Were a small town just outside of Winchester, Va. We have a local paper. We did have a local TV channel, but they cut the local funding, and the cable company wouldn't produce it or fund it. And we have no competition for cable in the area. We have Comcast, other that satellite (but they don't count) and that's it. If you want a broadband Internet connection here, plus TV, you are held hostage by Comcast. DSL is spotty here, if you can get the speed, and then there is dial-up. Yes Comcast rates are approved by the SCC of…

  5. Syracuse, NY

Local residents should not be held prisoner of corporate controlled news. Citizens should be able to throw out media owners that are not in sync with local views.

For example, my area has a monopoly of right-wing talk radio, the TV stations are conservative to right and the one newspaper opinion section mostly prints extremists' right-wing delusions, while it frequently censors the progressives.

This community is center to progressive, not conservative to right-wing as our media would suggest to a visitor.

  6. mentally healthy news

I want the option of a mentally healthy media. The current media is built around assumptions of conflict, fear, and gossip. I want to hear about about our problems, including suggested solutions and successful efforts to deal with the problems. This reinforces our sense of capability as a people. I want to know what is valid truth rather than presenting false talking points as if that balances the perspective. I want a place for news where courteous discourse is the norm.

The current websites use algorithms built on what is popular, which amps up adrenaline rush topics and the lowest…

  7. Santa Cruz, CA great public radio, newspaper needs support, free internet access

Our local newspaper, the Sentinel, is essential to hearing about what is going on in our county. It has been getting smaller, and needs a new way of supporting a staff of reporters. Our NPR stations, KUSP, KQED, KAZU & KZSC are all life savers, and depend on federal funding to survive. Most important, we need to maintain our access to the internet through multiple suppliers to keep costs down, and through our libraries. I want Public TV to offer mentally healthy news alternative.

  8. Fort Collins, CO is the only city along the Front Range without access to classical music.

KCFR in Denver took over the frequency that KVOD used to use to broadcast classical music beyond the Denver Metro area all the way north to Fort Collins. KCFR duplicates the NPR programming that we already were receiving from KUNC in Greeley, so its use of KVOD's frequency is not beneficial. The Fort Collins area needs a frequency that can be used for a repeater from KVOD or another classical music station such as KCME.

  9. Radio Station Ownership

Each radio station should be locally and independently owned by a governing board reflecting the diversity of the community. Non-commercial stations should be given priority.

  10. Bellingham, Washington

The media in my city, my state, and in this country, has deteriorated to such an extent that I no longer watch or listen to any of it -- with the exception of NPR and occasionally PBS (although the defunding of PBS, and its increasing reliance on corporate sponsorship, has resulted in its deterioration).

My primary source of news, outside of NPR, is now foreign, including the CBC, BBC, Al Jazeera, and other online sources.

Democracy relies on a vibrant public sphere, and the media play an essential role. American democracy is becoming increasingly dysfunctional as a result of our…

  11. seattle's best outlets for community input into the media are through its public radio stations

Seattle has one large daily newspaper, The Seattle Times, since the extinction of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer in March 2009. It is a hybrid between a McClatchy chain paper and a family owned dynasty (Blethen). While there is some support for investigative and in-depth journalism and the current editor is an advocate of net neutrality, the business model for this newspaper limits the ability for any kind of wide scale community forums and feedback, though there is an opportunity to respond via internet blogs on most stories.

Radio is a better avenue for community participation, as two large public radio stations,…

  13. York, PA

We need investigative reporting at all levels of government especially local and state. In comparison to Federal neither of these get the coverage. We do have City Council and some other city produced informational tidbits carried on Comcast but not on any of the satellite providers (which needs to be shared by Comcast and required to be carried as local channels by satellite providers, etc) and although you can watch it on the web I don't believe you can watch it till two weeks later. So there is no interaction via online. We have the same problem at the state…

  14. The news no longer covers election issues because they make more $$ from political advertising

If the news outlets covered elections as they should, there would be no need for candidates to advertise. If candidates had no need to advertise, they wouldn't need to sell us out to the wealthy special interests. We might actually get some public servants rather than the corporate shills we now have.

  15. Portland, OR -- a city with above-average independent media...

...can be a testing ground for a system of sustainable public funding for independent news/journalism. Based on McChesney & Nichols' model for saving American journalism, we can use a combination of opt-in public utility (power, phone, etc.) fees &/or state/local tax check-offs to finance existing (or new) local nonprofit radio, web & print news sources.

  17. Citizens of Quad Cities Share Multiple Options in the Media

Living in the midst of four cities, separated by the largest river in North America, local media outlets must cater to many different audiences in Illinois and Iowa. Eight television stations serve the Quad Cities. Where I live, the most prominent stations are WHBF (CBS affiliate), WQAD (ABC affiliate), and KLJB (Fox affiliate). As a student of Augustana College, I am not a permanent resident of the Quad Cities, so it is interesting to compare the styles of news with the aforementioned stations, and those of an immense market like Chicago.

In a recent class visit to WQAD’s station, we…

  18. Broadcast News and Community Needs

As a student from a small liberal arts college, I am presented with the opportunity to view several news stations. These stations choose to spend more time or weigh certain segments more heavily than others. However, news in general should focus more on the community and cater to the surrounding areas. From local news to our national news the audience still remains the public of the American citizen. It would be nice if news were delivered in such a manner as to highlight people across the nation whom have contributed to “something” great. Whether the contribution be on a smaller…
