South Lake Tahoe, CA
We need more local, real news. Our local paper is mainly supported by the big businesses in town who wield all the power over local politics. The paper is mostly advertisements and the staffing has been stripped to a skeleton crew.
We need real reporting and that is expensive. Can we develop a Peace Corps for reporters? Can we support research into delivery systems so that papers can learn how to cut printing costs? Can we launch a media campaign to explain why opinions are not news and dialogue is not the same a arguing and the world is not divided into 2 camps--the good guys and the bad guys? Can we enact laws to undue the massive consolidation of media? Can we develop an SBA specifically geared toward providing consultation to the bizarre but crucial market for opinion/news?
