CLOSED: Media In Your Community

The reboot.fcc.gov project has ended. All related public feedback forums have been closed.*

Tell us about your community and its media. Do you have a newspaper? Local TV news stations? Great websites? Anything else? What works well? What works poorly? How have things changed over time? What information do you wish you could get but can’t?

Please list the City and State you’re telling us about as the title of your idea.

  1. Ann Arbor, MI

The Ann Arbor News is gone now, bought up by a mega-corp, who can't manage the in-depth coverage or even relatively simple things like tracking & delivering subscriptions. If the former news reporters who lost their jobs were to start an internet news subscription service, where we'd get a free daily e-mail of their table of contents and could subscribe to download & read a few articles each week, I'd prefer that to the paper subscription from the AA news usurpers.

  2. Birmingham, AL

Lots of layoffs at The Birmingham News and local television stations... and also salary cuts for remaining employees as well as salary freezes. I've also found the reporting at the Birmingham News website to be thin; I think the News can sometimes do good work... we've had some interesting (!) politics here and there are some good reporters. Across print (including weekly papers) & broadcast here, I am dismayed by how conservative the media can be... there isn't enough balance. Or unbiased reporting. Overall, I worry that the quality of journalism will suffer if media do not find a sustainable…

  3. Worcester, MA

We have a terrible newspaper the Worcester Telegram and Gazette. It has only one or two original stories per paper.

We have a weekly Magazine the Worcester Mag which is excellent. no enough for 2nd largest city in New England

  4. las vegas, nevada

Our news agencies in the Las Vegas/Henderson areas are bland and censored (especially the Review Journal newspaper. If they don't like your post, it is deleted or moved many pages back. George Knapp is the best investigative reporter... too bad he is kept away from the "real" news stories. I wouldn't give a burnt match for the rest of the "over-opinionated", so-called investigative reporters.

  5. Hazelwood, MO

Hazelwood has only one FM radio station licensed, and it was moved in from Jerseyville, IL. Radio One owns the station, and does not provide any programming that serves Hazelwood and surrounding communities, such as Florissant, Bridgeton, Ferguson, Berkeley and even St. Charles, just eight miles away. We have a twice-weekly newspaper, one of the Suburban Journals; unfortunately, it's owned by Lee Enterprises, which also owns the daily St. Louis Post-Dispatch. They also don't provide much of the needed information for Hazelwood and surrounding communities. Hazelwood is the second largest community in the northern part of St. Louis County (only…

  6. Mankato, MN

The online part of the local paper has a forum and anybody can leave comments to a letter to the editor or a story. The reporting is better than the local tv station, which leaves a lot of serious reporting to be desired. It's not at all investigative.

  7. Port Townsend, WA

There used to be an independent newspaper, but the community let it die. Now the establishment weekly paper is the only poorly written, non-investigative access. Also, the long-awaited radio broadcast license that was awarded to the area has yet to be used.

  8. Buffalo, New York

Has average coverage of politics, mostly "he said ... she said" stuff. Fluff.

  10. memphis, tn.

The local news here focuses too much on the bad things in the community rather than the good. And their reporting of these instances, such as crime, is so sensationalized to the point that people are scared to go outside, when statistically, if the crimes are compared to the size of the population, it's not at all as bad as they make it seem. And when there's bad weather near here, they have that super-imposed screen that runs the same information for hours sometimes. If there's a program on that you want to view, and it's in HD, their displays…

  11. New Orleans, LA

We have great radio here, a good mix of independent and conservative voice, the newspaper is relatively liberal like most mainstream media, but they do print conservative opinion pieces almost daily.

  12. Las Vegas, NV

Our local newspaper the Review-Journal is terrible, since it's heavily conservative. The Sun does great coverage that the R-J doesn't do, we've also got two alternatives that aren't bad, but good writing. Also channel 3 & 8 is the best news station in town, while channels 5 & 13 are terrible & mostly do more fluff than report real news, but they need to do much better. So that's my opinion on this.

  15. San Diego, CA

KPBS does a good job of delivering local news, as does some of the smaller papers (La jolla light,...). The Union Tribune does a passable job , but the depth and perspectives on local affairs leaves something to be desired. Most of the community involvement sections asking for votes on an issue are inherently slanted if not frivolous.
The TV news stations are a joke (with the exception of KPBS TV.... which usually spends more prime time on national news and arts and does not have a solid local news segment that I am aware of. That said their utilization…

  17. Shoshoni, WY

Media in Wyoming is a joke, pure and simple. The local papers in the Shoshoni area are nothing but mouthpieces for the Republican Party, the Chamber of Commerce, and the welfare ranchers.

TV is as bad or worse. ABC and NBC, which are the only corporate outlets providing local "news" are as bad or worse than printed media. The bobble headed Ken and Barbie (or Barbie and Barbie) dashboard-doll-like trainee newsreaders stumble through free publicity for Chamber types or ranchers, show clips of lying right-wing politicians pretending to give a damn about working people (while serving the wealthy), show misleading…

  18. Louisville, KY

The local media in Louisville, KY does not make the grade, so to speak. News outlets focus too much on sports and the latest crime in the Metro area. Weather reports have dwindled to a ratings contest. (I have to rely on the Weather Channel for the most reliable local forecast!) There is little focus on what is happening in Frankfort and even less on what the Metro Council is up to. For this reason, I have given up on local media. Is there anything the FCC can do to restore my faith?

  19. Reston, VA

We need a local radio station!! This could provide timely and informative news and programs specific to our community of 60,000. With live announcers and newscasts, this could add much needed vitality and interaction, and a sense of community to our community.

  20. Newark, DE

1 newspaper lacking in quality news coverage. Local TV stations barely cover my state. Lumped in with other states' coverage (PA, NJ, MD).

Need more voices. More unbiased media outlets. More jobs in media.
