  1. Frederick County, MD - 930 WFMD (Aloha Station Trust, LLC) Public News Radio

Something isn't right in Frederick County, Maryland. 930WMD and Aloha Stations Trust, LLC have gone too far with their political practices on Public Interest Radio. We need the FCC to look into it.
Frederick County, Maryland is a small but growing rural community situated 50 miles from our nation's capitol, Washington, DC. It is a community with a strong dedication to its people, farming and conservative values. By virtue of location Frederick County is also a growing community, welcoming cultural diversity, art, science and business both large and small. We have a local paper that folks have depended upon for…

  5. Toano, Virginia

We have a fantastic 2x weekly local paper, a great online news feed, but the local supervisors recently agreed to yet another 10 year monopoly agreement with Cox Communications. And since Toano is on the edge of the FCC Hampton Roads district - that's the news/weather/traffic we get vs. the more accurate Richmond stations because Cox is unwilling to provide more than the minimum required. It doesn't seem right to be relying on stations from farther away when closer stations are available.

  7. Online news, Fort lauderdale, fl

The online version of the Fort Lauderdale Sun sentinel is like that of so many newspapers -- geared to the lowest common denominator and similar to local TV news. I would gladly pay $10-$20 month for online news that was presented in an intelligent format and didn't focus on sports, crime, and celebrities.

  9. Rock Island, IL

For decades, the news has been something that people can count on to be in the media, whether it was in newspapers, radio, television, or, more recently, the internet. I had never really thought about how journalists get their information for the news until a recent visit to WQAD.
For a while, I can imagine that journalists have had to go to great lengths to find exactly what they need for a good story. Research using books, interviews, and undercover investigation were, and still are, great resources for finding good news. But now that the internet has basically taken over…

  10. Broadcast News and Community Needs

As a student from a small liberal arts college, I am presented with the opportunity to view several news stations. These stations choose to spend more time or weigh certain segments more heavily than others. However, news in general should focus more on the community and cater to the surrounding areas. From local news to our national news the audience still remains the public of the American citizen. It would be nice if news were delivered in such a manner as to highlight people across the nation whom have contributed to “something” great. Whether the contribution be on a smaller…

  11. Citizens of Quad Cities Share Multiple Options in the Media

Living in the midst of four cities, separated by the largest river in North America, local media outlets must cater to many different audiences in Illinois and Iowa. Eight television stations serve the Quad Cities. Where I live, the most prominent stations are WHBF (CBS affiliate), WQAD (ABC affiliate), and KLJB (Fox affiliate). As a student of Augustana College, I am not a permanent resident of the Quad Cities, so it is interesting to compare the styles of news with the aforementioned stations, and those of an immense market like Chicago.

In a recent class visit to WQAD’s station, we…

  16. Davis, California

If Davis, California is any example, mass collaboration may be the future of local media.

The Davis Wiki (http://daviswiki.org), started in 2004, is an entirely community-maintained, collaborative, non-profit effort to compile anything and everything about living in in Davis, California. Unlike a local blog, which may be maintained by at most a handful of individuals, the Davis Wiki allows anyone in the community to contribute back their knowledge of the community with the community. The result is an information resource tailored to the needs of the entire community. The project contains over 15,000 pages on nearly every aspect…

  18. Portland, OR -- a city with above-average independent media...

...can be a testing ground for a system of sustainable public funding for independent news/journalism. Based on McChesney & Nichols' model for saving American journalism, we can use a combination of opt-in public utility (power, phone, etc.) fees &/or state/local tax check-offs to finance existing (or new) local nonprofit radio, web & print news sources.

  19. The news no longer covers election issues because they make more $$ from political advertising

If the news outlets covered elections as they should, there would be no need for candidates to advertise. If candidates had no need to advertise, they wouldn't need to sell us out to the wealthy special interests. We might actually get some public servants rather than the corporate shills we now have.

We need to allow tv stations wmxi and wood to set up a low power rebroadcaster in or around the South Haven or Bangor Michigan area. TV reception on these channels are not always avalible to rual people when it is bad weather.
