Some existing public media could use help -- through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting -- to build up our educational, public service radio and television systems on new media platforms. They've proved themselves in serving children, voters, diverse communities, and all age groups. I encourage free citizen-driven communication free from commercial imperatives -- but with a professional counterpart to provide training, modeling, organization and leadership. Our local public media institutions can serve this role.

I should have underscored the journalistic role of public media -- truly impartial and elevated in its depth and richness. Again, this leadership can be extended to all communities through local institutions that have clear mission and accountability to the public. Plus they serve as a reliable backbone during times of crisis.
